Augusta XC Competes at Meet of Champions
Members of Augusta’s cross country team competed at the Meet of Champions in Bourbon County on Saturday in the final tune-up before the regional meet.
In the boys varsity race that featured 242 runners, Bryant Curtis finished in 18:02, medaling finishing 18th. Grayson Miller finished 33rd in 18:30 and was also a medalist. Nicholas Mains ran 19:47, a personal record. John Hamm finished in 20:42, while Conner Snapp ran 20:59. 7th grader Jasper Miller, competing in his first 5K, ran 25:14.
The boys finished runner-up in the Class A division. Overall, they finished 9th out of 19 teams.
In the girls varsity race, Braylie Curtis ran 22:24.
The race was the final one before the regional meet this Saturday. According to MileSplit projections, the boys team is projected to finish among the top three, while lone female runner Braylie Curtis looks for a return trip to state as an individual. The boys have won the region championship in back-to-back years.
“The strongest competition for the boys will be Lexington Christian, but Nicholas and Trimble Counties are looking to contend as well,” Augusta Coach Tim Litteral said. “Our first goal is to qualify for the state meet, which would take a top five finish. Beyond that we feel we can compete for one of the top two spots, but unlike last year where we won by 50 points, I expect the opposite this year. I think it could be very close amongst the top two or three teams, and we’ll need all of our guys to run at their potential. As for Braylie, if she runs how she’s ran the last few weeks, she should put herself in a good position to advance to the state meet for the fourth consecutive year.”
The Region 5 A Championship is this Saturday, October 22, at Masterson Station Park in Lexington. The races begin at 3:00.
