A new work-based program has been implemented for the 2019-2020 school year at Augusta Independent.  This program involves not only seniors who are preparing to go out into the workforce, but also 8th graders who are in the process of developing their career interests.

Augusta 8th grade students are interning with several different faculty and staff members in the areas of culinary, industrial maintenance, technology, law enforcement, health sciences, office technology, and child development/education.  This program is designed to give students an introduction not only to different career paths, but also to the newly developed employability skills standards.

AIS has also introduced a modified work-based learning program with the help of several community businesses.  Many AHS seniors are part of a work co-op in the afternoons and are placed in some of the local businesses for on-the-job training.  This program, along with the 8th grade program, goes hand in hand with our new Work Ethic Seal Program.

There are several standards of the new workplace skills program that these internship and work-based learning experiences will help students to meet.

  • Demonstrate self-control and behave in accordance with rules with minimal direction.
  • Successfully carry out expectations with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrate endurance, and capacity to complete tasks.
  • Demonstrate skills and behaviors appropriate for school and work environments
  • Work well with others in a team.
  • Apply skills to clearly, effectively and convincingly express ideas and messages to others appropriate to the environment.

“The mission of these new experiences is to prepare students for the transition from school to work and life beyond the classroom,” said Principal Robin Kelsch.  “We also aim to help our students develop a strong work ethic, which is essential to secure and maintain successful employment.”
