AUGUSTA -- The Maysville Housing Authority has stepped in to pick up the recently canceled summer lunch program at Augusta Independent School.
AIS Superintendent Lisa McCane made the announcement of the cancellation after it was discovered there was not enough money in the food service budget to support it this year.
The following day, Michelle Moss, with the Housing Authority of Maysville, contacted McCane and offered to pick up AIS as one of the sites for its summer feeding program.
"The district was contacted with an offer that sounded too good to be true," McCane said. "They will add (AIS) as a site for the program offered through their office. What was a disappointment one day turned into a blessing the next day. We are excited to partner with the Maysville Housing Authority to continue providing summer lunch to our students and families."
According to McCane, the program will begin May 30 in the AIS Cafeteria and will continue until Aug. 4 at 11 a.m. to noon each day.
Moss said it was the right thing to do because the housing authority already had several sites in Bracken County and this was just one more way it could reach out and help the community.
"As soon as we heard about it, we knew we could help," Moss said. "So, we contacted (McCane) and made arrangements."
Moss said the housing authority will prepare the meals at the Beechwood Community Center and transport them to the various sites around the communities it serves.
The program is a part of the United States Department of Agriculture program and allows for children 18 and under to have at least one meal available to them, according to Moss.
Moss said in addition to offering a lunch each day, the program also provides food for school events and church vacation Bible schools.
